Hello group,

I am vegan and I hate when I feed my dogs meat (I do not give them commercial processed food). I was wondering about vegetarian dogs. Any experience with this subject? Thanks!

I have known some. Especially if they are not a particularly strong animal, vegitarian diet seems to do well for them. There are now brands on the market but read the ingrediants. If the first ingrediant is corn, dont buy it.

I have a pit/lab mix that is almost 9.... Vegetarian on/off - usually a homemade brown rice, mackerel, raw egg and oil - and then parts of whatever we are eating - which is vegetarian.  Has the spirit of a puppy still.  Everyone assumes she is about 2.  I also fast her, sometimes for a couple days in a row.  Also, bones make up a small part of her diet.   Her weight fluctuates with the seasons.  She plays and rough houses with two 1 year old chocolate labs that are on a pretty standard dog-food diet, who are both on the hearty side - and holds her own to stay the least.

I live by the belief, that if I wouldn't eat it, then my dog shouldn't eat it - with the obvious exception of a raw bone, as I do occasionally have a piece of fish...

Cheers
